Tamaki Makaurau Pianists and Songwriters Light Up Auckland for Illuminate Matariki Series
From June 24 to July 3, some of Auckland’s finest piano musicians will be performing at their favorite venues, with a series of innovative twilight concerts free to the public.
Each “Illuminate Matariki” event harnesses digital technology that allows piano notes to trigger a captivating light show unique to each song.
Each evening begins with a performance by Tereora – bringing waiata (songs) and kōrero about Te Whānau Marama (Family of Light) and the magic of Matariki / The Māori New Year. Tereora’s work focuses on the themes of Maumahara (remembrance) and celebration in Aotearoa, into which the rise of the Matariki takes us. “Mānawatia a Matariki – we welcome Matariki!” The captivating range of piano-based performers and venues are:
- Matthias Jordan – Parnell Cathedral, June 24 (5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.); Avondale Arts Market July 1, 6 p.m.
- Nic Manders – Tahake Reserve, Mt Eden June 25, 7 p.m.
- Greg Johnson – Toussaint Ponsonby, June 30, 7 p.m.
- John Hellriegel – Pah Homestead, July 2, 7 p.m.
- Nick Dow – Titirangi Beach, July 3, 7 p.m.
