One of today’s most celebrated singer-songwriters HER comes to Portsmouth – Daily Press
PORTSMOUTH — She’s coming.
She as in HER – Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson – brings her Back of My Mind Tour to the Atlantic Union Bank Pavilion on June 7. Opening acts are Marzz and other guests.
HER, short for “Have it All Revealed,” is a 24-year-old singer and multi-instrumentalist who seems to be everywhere these days: national commercials, an upcoming movie (the screen adaptation of “The Color Purple ” musical) and award shows. That’s good, because she always has something to say, with both a message in her lyrics and a musical presence. She flaunts her talents as a singer and performer, her combination of historical knowledge and current awareness. Her appearance at the Grammys in April was generally informed and flamboyant.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis – of Time and Janet Jackson albums – flanked her on keytar and bass as she sang “Damage”, a song about being taken for granted. Then HER moved on to a drum kit, slamming cross beats, before moving on to what used to be called a Grammy Moment: a young musician joining an old one. This year, she joined Lenny Kravitz for his 1993 hit, “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” both singing and strapping on a guitar, portraying herself not as a follower but as an equal.
Oh, and she’s also an Oscar winner. HER won the golden statue last year in the original song category for “Fight For You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah.”
