Bethany Lutheran Concert to Feature ‘Forgotten Songwriters’ on October 16

Bethany Lutheran Church of Crystal Lake will perform Christy Bennett’s “Forgotten Songwriters” at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 16 at the church, 76 W. Crystal Lake Ave.

Bennett is one of Chicago’s foremost jazz artists whose quest for gypsy jazz led her to uncover buried musical treasures.

She focuses on the work of women and those who are black, indigenous and of color. “Forgotten Songwriters” will feature music from some of Bennett’s favorite female songwriters of the 1930s and 1940s along with stories about their backgrounds and careers.

Classically trained with a degree in vocal performance from DePaul University, Bennett was drawn to jazz through lessons and combos.

As an educator, she taught singing and piano at the Academy of Music and Art. She is Director of Development and Staff at Access Contemporary Music in the Ravenswood area of Chicago.

Bethany Lutheran Church is a community of faith committed to bringing people together for renewal and service.

The congregation has a worldwide mission with a center in downtown Crystal Lake. Bethany Arts Series presents several musical programs each year to inspire, comfort, entertain and engage the community. The concert is organized by the church with a collection of free will.
